“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)
Baptism is the first sacrament where we become united with Christ and the Church. No other sacrament can be received without it. A Priest or Deacon performs this rite by pouring water on the baptismal candidate baptizing him/her, “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” thereby cleansing the soul original sin through water and the Holy Spirit.
Any person who has been a registered parishioner, actively present at Mass for at least 6 months and wishes to have their child baptized may call the parish office to make arrangements for scheduling the baptism and attending the pre-baptism classes for the parents and godparents. We encourage you to take the instructions and schedule the Baptism even before the baby is born.
Adults who are interested in being baptized in the Catholic Church, or if already baptized want to join the Catholic Faith, should call the parish offices for information about attending the Rite of Christian Initiation classes for Adults.
“Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.” (1 Corinthians 10:16-17)
Christ, during the Last Supper took bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to his disciples and told them to eat of His Body. He gave a similar blessing and command with a chalice filled with wine which He turned into His Precious Blood. Now at Mass through the words of consecration by the Priest, the bread and wine become the very Body and Blood of Christ. Food and drink nourish our bodies ‒ Christ’s body and blood nourishes us spiritually.
The sacrament of First Holy Communion is celebrated for children in the school and religious education program in the 2nd grade.
For information about receiving this sacrament as an adult please see
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
“The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you.” (John 14:26)
In the sacrament of Confirmation the candidate receives the gift of the Holy Spirit more fully and continues their journey with Christ. Since baptism typically happens when the candidate is a baby, Confirmation is a great way for an older child or an adult to acknowledge that they still want to continue their journey with God and strengthen their relationship with Him through the Holy Spirit.
At the present time in the Archdiocese of Omaha, Confirmation is celebrated when young people are in the eighth grade. Students and families are expected to participate in the preparation process which begins in the seventh grade.
Confirmation is also celebrated as part of the initiation rites at the
Easter Vigil liturgy with those adults who have participated in the RCIA program.
Adults who are interested in receiving the sacrament of Confirmation should call our parish offices at the phone numbers listed below.
“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)
The Sacrament of Reconciliation allows for spiritual healing and absolution for people who have distanced themselves from God through sin. During the sacrament of Penance, one confesses their sins to God through a Priest who forgives their sins by God’s mercy, and orders them to live a more faithful life through absolution. Confession is essential to cultivating and fruitfully living out the Word of God.
Regular Confession Schedule - Saturdays: Between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. before Mass at St. Bernadette
Watch the bulletin for additional reconciliation services during the season of Advent and Lent. Also please feel welcome to call our parish offices anytime to make an appointment to celebrate this sacrament.
“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14)
In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the Priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to bring healing and strength to body and soul. The sacrament has the power to forgive sins when the one anointed is unable to confess. Sometimes it brings a restoration of physical health as well. When one falls seriously ill a Priest should be called to anoint them and pray over them calling on Christ to give them strength and healing.
The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness or an impending surgery is sufficient.
If you or a family member has a serious illness or is about to undergo a serious surgery please call our parish offices at the phone numbers listed below.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them.” (Genesis 1:27)
Marriage in the Church for the baptized isn’t simply a union for the mutual convenience of a man and woman. The devotion husband and wife have for each other and Christ mirrors Christ’s love and devotion for His bride, the Church. Through their marriage vows, a couple promises to establish a union that is exclusively faithful, permanent (until death), and fruitful (open to children). In a sacramental marriage couples strive to help one another grow in holiness through the practice of their faith, which they also promise to hand on to their children through their lived example and the training they give in the home and through parish schools or religious formation programs.
Any person who has been an active registered parishioner for at least 6 months and wishes to be married at Holy Ghost or St. Bernadette may call our parish offices to make an appointment to visit with the Priest at least six months prior to the intended wedding date. Arrangements will be made and marriage preparation classes scheduled as required by the Archdiocese of Omaha prior to receiving the Sacrament of Matrimony.
Please call our parish offices the phone numbers listed below for more information or to make an appointment with Fr. Boyd.
“Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.” (Acts 20:28)
